Divergent by Veronica Roth

Divergent by Veronica Roth is set in the future in five different factions. The characters are Tris, Four and other training participants. Tris is the main character and it is told from her point of view. First, we find out that she has to take a test to decide what faction she’s going to be in. Next, she is chosen to be in the Abnegation faction, and then she tries to move up to a different faction. Later, her parents come to visit her and give her advice about what to expect. My reaction to this book is that it is really adventurous. It reminds me of the Hunger Games because the characters have to try to survive. The writing is interesting because they talk about fighting. I really love this book!

Zom-B by Darren Shan

Zombies are taking over Ireland! Zom-b is a fantasy book written by Darren Shan that takes place in Ireland. B is a young girl who gets abused by her dad at home and has troubles at school. She finds out that zombies are everywhere in Ireland and she tries to keep herself safe.

My reaction is I like the idea of zombies attacking Ireland because zombies are cool.
B’s dad is racist in the book and I don’t think it’s a big deal because people are racist now. Living in Ireland seems like any other place to live. I didn’t understand the book because it was lame and boring.

Dork Diaries By: Rachael Renee Russell

How would you feel if your friends wouldn’t let you join their club? Niki is a teenager and is nervous when she first starts going to her new school in the realistic fiction book Dork Diaries by Rachael Renee Russell. She doesn’t fit in with the other people yet because she doesn’t know anybody that goes there. Then, she becomes friends with Chloe and Zoey. Later on, she enters the school art show and she finds out that Mackenzie joined it, too. Mackenzie is a popular girl that teases Niki. Niki feels uncomfortable about the art show, because she thinks that Mackenzie is going to win.

My reaction to this book was mainly boredom. I liked it because I understood what was going on. Some parts were repetitive like when she kept talking about the boy she likes. Some parts were funny like when Nikki blew up her science project because she put the wrong chemical in. I think this book is good for a middle school girl because it has a lot of gossip.

Surviving Hitler: A Boy in the Nazi Death Camps by Andrea Warren

Jack doesn't eat but when he does, he has watery soup and bread that tastes like saw dust. This book is non-fiction biography of Jack Mandelbaum. Jack is a 15 year -old boy who lived in Poland but was forced to go to the concentration camps in 1939 until 1945. Jack meets Moniek who is the same age.  He helps Jack and they work together. SS men are a part of Hitler’s military and they run the whole camp. They tell prisoners what to do, control meals, and beat/kill. His family needs to move He gets a job and then gets sent to a concentration camp. He gets very small portions of food and works really hard. Sleeping there was really uncomfortable. He is treated badly but some people help him.
My Reaction
I have read over half the book and I’m surprised Jack isn't dead. At first when he had to live in the ghetto, it was dangerous because a lot of guards and soldiers. In the concentration camps, he doesn't get enough food and he could die from when he has to do hard work. He also was trying to keep his friends alive by helping them eat twice. He could have gotten killed if he got caught. I hope that Jack will survive throughout the rest of the book.

Blog Post #4: Diary of a Wimpy Kid Hard Luck by Jeff Kinney

The book I read was called Diary of a Wimpy Kid Hard Luck by Jeff Kinney. It’s about a boy named Greg that is trying to survive middle school. He is having trouble with middle school because Greg’s friend Rowley has a girlfriend and their friendship is not close anymore. Ever since Rowley got a girlfriend, Abigail, they haven’t been hanging out with each other.
Right now I just read that Greg’s grandparents are coming to his house and he is excited because he never sees them. They are coming to visit and it’s special because they live far away. Greg has cousins that are coming over and they are really wild. Their names are Malvin and Malcolm. They have a lot of pets that they are going to bring to Greg’s house. Also, Greg’s Aunt Cakey told Greg to go take a nap for no reason and Greg said that he was too old for naps. His Aunt just sent him to go take a nap anyway.

Blog Post #3: Diary of a Wimpy Kid the Third Wheel by Jeff Kinney

The book I read was called Diary of a Wimpy Kid the Third Wheel by Jeff Kinney. It’s about a guy named Greg who is a teenager and is writing a journal about his family and school. The story mostly takes place in a school and his house. In the beginning, we learned that when Greg was little he got everything from his brother Rodrick as a hand me down. He didn’t like it because he didn’t like Rodrick’s style. As the story continues, readers find out that there is a school dance coming up and Greg is trying to get a girl to go to the dance with him. Then, Greg decides to send Valentine cards to a few girls asking them to go. Finally, he ends up going to dance with one of those girls.

I thought the most interesting part of the book was when Greg goes to the school dance because I didn’t know if he would have a girl to go with. Right before this, Greg takes a girl named Abigail to dinner and readers find out that they are going to the dance together. Then, while they are at the dance Abigail talks to her friends instead of hanging out with Greg. I thought this was interesting because it seems like Abigail doesn’t like Greg but at the end they slow dance.

Blog Post #1: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The book I read was called The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It’s about a girl named Katniss who is a tribute in The Hunger Games, a battle where children kill each other. The story mostly takes place in an arena where they are in the Hunger Games. In the beginning, we learn that Katniss hunts for food to bring back to her family. She is poor because she lives in a mining district. As the story continues, readers find out that the Hunger Games is coming up and that they will pick one boy and one girl to be in the games from each district. Katniss’ younger sister and Peeta are chosen, but Katniss volunteers to take her place. Then, they go to the Capital to get ready and practice for the Hunger Games. Finally, all of the tributes are taken to the arena to start the Hunger Games.
I thought the most interesting part of the book was when Katniss tries to help heal Peeta. Right before this, Peeta got hurt and camouflaged his body so that he could be hidden from the other tributes. Then, Katniss finds him and takes him to stay in a cave. I thought this showed she was really caring because even though they are in the same district, sooner or later they are supposed to kill each so someone can win.
My favorite character in this story was Katniss. I would describe her as helpful and adventurous. For example, she is adventurous because she would sneak out of the district to hunt for food with her bow and arrow. She was also helpful when she took care of Peeta during the Hunger Games and when she hunted for her family. Finally, I would also describe this character as talented because she can aim well with her bow and arrow and had good killing skills.
