Jack doesn't eat but when he does, he has watery soup and bread that tastes like saw dust. This book is non-fiction biography of Jack Mandelbaum. Jack is a 15 year
-old boy who lived in Poland but was forced to go to the concentration camps in
1939 until 1945. Jack meets Moniek who is the same age. He helps Jack and they work together. SS men
are a part of Hitler’s military and they run the whole camp. They tell
prisoners what to do, control meals, and beat/kill. His family needs to move He
gets a job and then gets sent to a concentration camp. He gets very small
portions of food and works really hard. Sleeping there was really
uncomfortable. He is treated badly but some people help him.
My Reaction
I
have read over half the book and I’m surprised Jack isn't dead. At first when
he had to live in the ghetto, it was dangerous because a lot of guards and
soldiers. In the concentration camps, he doesn't get enough food and he could
die from when he has to do hard work. He also was trying to keep his friends
alive by helping them eat twice. He could have gotten killed if he got caught. I
hope that Jack will survive throughout the rest of the book.
I read this book too and I think you described it really well. I like the way you described how the food tasted. I think you were really descriptive on your reaction about the book, and I was surprised too about how bad the prisoners were treated.
